“A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination, and instill a love of learning.”

Brad Henry

Becoming a teacher has been my passion since elementary school. I was inspired by the incredible educators who supported me through my dyslexia diagnosis. Their dedication and belief in my potential motivated me to pursue a career in education so that I can provide the same encouragement and guidance to future children.

For the past five years, I have worked at The Goddard School at Robious Station, where I provided care and educational support for children ranging from 6 weeks to 10 years old. During this time, I had the opportunity to assist the school age children as they navigated the world of virtually learning. Implemented organizational strategies to ensure all students attended their Zoom calls and completed independent work efficiently. Later I transitioned to the lead teacher in the two-year-old classroom where I designed and implemented developmentally appropriate lessons that targeted milestones and goals. Additionally, I assisted the director with daily operations, including organizing and maintaining child and employee records, as well as managing supply and snack orders to support a well-equipped learning environment.

Through my teacher preparation program at Virginia Commonwealth University, I have gained hand-ons experience in Richmond Public Schools across three practicum placements. In my first placement I learned from experienced teachers and VCU professors on effective teaching strategies. I observed a first-grade morning and literacy block, noting effective strategies that fostered classroom community, communication, and engagement. In my second practicum, I collaborated with my VCU professor to administer literacy assessments, analyze student data, and tailor instruction to individual learning needs. My third practicum provided opportunities to participate in school events, allowing me to engage with students and be actively involved in the broader school community. Currently, I am finished with my first student teaching placement in Kindergarten at Reams Road Elementary School. During my time in Kindergarten, I had the opportunity to observe and learn from an experienced mentor teacher, gaining insight into effective instructional and classroom management strategies. Additionally, I have participated in conferences with staff and parents to collaboratively develop plans and next steps for students requiring additional academic or behavioral support. At the moment I am in the early stages of my second placement in 2nd grade. I have been able to observe and reflect on how beneficial positive and consistent parent communication is. Additionally I have learned effective classroom management strategies that foster a supportive, kind, and loving learning environment for all students.
